Got a mortgage loan for a beautiful house and had the most amazing gal by my side… It's been over 40 years, and I can still smell the freshly lacquered floors sometimes. God, how I loved that house.

But nothing lasts forever… and for me, that only took 11 months. The energy crash of the 70s with its pay cuts hit me like a freight train… I was suddenly unable to pay our mortgage… We lost the house… and if it wasn't for my wife, I would've probably lost my life too!

Heartbroken and defeated… We moved back to my parents. And although we were barely making ends meet with the monthly bills and meds, food wasn't a problem.

My parents had a beautiful backyard. And being down-to-earth, hardworking people, they had that yard filled with fresh growing vegetables, a well looked after chicken coup and a well-stocked cellar.

The problem… was the PEOPLE.

As prices went through the roof, everyone started running around looking for scraps. I remember seeing this old homeless man… Probably not older than I am now… sitting on the sidewalk at a corner, begging for cents to buy something to eat.

I was ashamed I couldn't spare a damn nickel, trying not to cry, seeing the tears of desperation in his eyes…

Next day I walked by that same corner and the police was containing the area. He'd been killed during the night for the blanket he was covering himself with.

That image of urban poverty and cruelty has haunted me my entire life…

So… it wasn't even about food anymore… It was about everything that could give the tiniest sense of comfort and warmth… And people were getting killed for it.

But even though I'd seen that with my own eyes… With everything going on around us… I thought that we would be safe in the comfort of our home.

All that until January 19th, 1975. Monday.

The absolute worst day of my life.

I came back from work after dark, at around 8 P.M. ... I parked the car in the driveway and just froze for a second. There were no lights on inside the house.

Everyone should've been at home...

I walked up to the door and tried to unlock it, but it just pushed open. And I felt a cold shiver down my spine. Something was definitely wrong.

Judie? Mom? Dad?

Silence.

I tried the light switch. It didn't work... I had no flashlight... So I just stumbled into the kitchen and lit a match.

And what I saw changed me...

My wife, the woman that I love, was gagged up and tied to a chair in the living room, staring at me in horror with tears running down her blueish cheeks. I ran and untied her... And her cry of pure anger and desperation ripped my soul.

“Honey. Honey. Look at me. Are you hurt? Where's mom and dad?”

She couldn't speak. She just looked to her right, trying to point at something on the floor, with her hands shaking.

And in the match light, I saw them.

My mother and my father... The beautiful people that had so lovingly and warmly raised and took care of me... were lying on the living room floor, covered in blood, barely breathing, clinging to their lives.

There's nothing I can say that can describe how I felt. It's something that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. My parents... The people that gave me love and warmth and comfort... The people that fed and dressed and educated me... Were barely breathing. And I wasn't there to protect them.

I rushed and wrapped my arms around them as wide as I could in a futile attempt to give them... life... MY life!

But they weren't moving...

I couldn't even cry... I was... LOST.

I picked up the phone and called 911. And as I was holding them, waiting for the ambulance...

I think I felt enraged... and I think I felt panic and pain... the state of shock I was in has somehow erased most of what happened that night from my emotional memory... But one thing I'm sure I felt... one thing I'll never forget was... the sense of POWERLESSNESS.

I felt powerless because it was too late. Because I couldn't do anything to help them... And most of all, because I DIDN'T, do anything to PROTECT them.

They were both taken to the ICU... My mother regained consciousness at the hospital, but my father was in a coma for 5 weeks.

I just couldn't help but be MAD. I was mad at the thieves that broke into our home... I was mad at the cops for not being there... But most of all I was mad because I knew who was the only one to blame for this… ME.

I was MAD at myself that I was COMPLETELY DEPENDENT on the Government and law enforcement. And FURIOUS that for so many months I had thought about doing something... anything... from putting in a better lock on the door to actually barring the windows.

If I would've just done something... anything... to keep them safe... to keep my home secure. My dear wife and my loving parents wouldn't have gone through that tragedy.

I was mad at myself also because I knew exactly what was going on out there during crisis and recession... How everyone starts fending for themselves... How panic and starvation and desperation brings out the worst in people... But I never thought I'd see my loved ones on the floor, beaten to a pulp over 5 jars of pickles a cheap watch and 2 blankets. Because that's everything the thieves... those soulless bastards took.

There was nothing else to steal. We had no valuables like cash or jewelry... So they just took out their frustration on my innocent, loving parents... beating them to near death.

It was that moment I realized I had to do something.

I had to keep both them and my wife safe... We were planning on having kids... But how could we bring innocent souls into this retched world without being able to actually protect them? To do something I wish I had done before having my family suffer for my ignorance.

I had to find a way to keep my home safe. Unbreakable. Thief proof. Bulletproof!

And the very next day I went to work with only one thing in mind... I had to find a way to make my home an impenetrable fortress.

I immediately began researching and reading every single book on police case-work, famous burglaries and home defense I could find in the local library.

I made it my sole purpose because leaving my family's wellbeing in the hands of the Government and its law enforcement clearly wasn't an option anymore.

I always had great respect for cops. And I still do. But hunger and despair change even the most beautiful heart warm person into a vicious beast. And unfortunately, there aren't enough officers on the streets... Especially in times of panic like these.

So I immediately began to look at the problem from every angle to secure my home and make it a perfectly safe environment for me and my family. There had to be something.

Frustrated, I created a list of what I felt I should do to turn my house into the fortress that I wanted so bad:

Something cheap and easy to obtain (or build).
Easy to operate. When I had to leave the house, or we all needed to go out, it had to be something even my parents could easily access and use.
Can be used for long periods of time or distress. If we had to lock ourselves in, it should still be as safe on day 90 as it was on day one.
It should be close to or even maintenance-free. No pain or headaches from jamming parts or messy weekly lubrication

So I thought... An alarm system will definitely do the trick. It was a new thing back then, but undoubtedly reliable and relatively easy to install, so I looked pretty much into this option. However, when I started to consider the costs, I realized I was looking at a minimum $2500 investment to get a really good system up and running. Not to mention the monthly phone company costs if I wanted to hook it to dispatch. And for what I was making back then… It just wasn't possible.

Even today, when there are so many off the shelf options... You're still looking at over $1000 in total costs for a good alarm system. But in 1975, the options were so limited, that it was more than triple that.

Plus, after I thought it through... It wasn't that efficient when you were at home... Open one window by mistake and the horn goes off. It would've attracted precisely the kind of attention I was afraid of.

So this option was off the list.

Next, I considered installing a heavy-duty lock.

But what's a good lock without a secure door. And, I was again looking at over $1000 in costs. Not the cheap and easy solution I had in mind.

Not to mention that having a metal "vault-like door" smack down in the middle of my front wall would've just been begging for it. There's almost always something worth the risk behind a door like that.

So I had only one option.

If I wanted to make sure my family never goes through such an experience again, I had to create my own solution.

It had to be something cheap.

And fast and easy to build because I definitely didn't have any technical skills to build complicated locks and devices.

Being a teacher doesn't really offer those kinds of skills.

So I started looking into every other solution that could bring me security for my family. There was no internet back then... There wasn't a search button that you could click, and results just pop up under your eyes...

I had to go through literally an entire library... hundreds of books, chapter by chapter, and page by page.

Many sleepless nights passed, and I was getting tired of reading tens of thousands of pages for a simple solution.

Yet one day, my wife, Judy, reminded me about my uncle Bill and his research in bank vault designs.

He used to work for a renowned company in the vault manufacturing industry. And he was one of the best in his field.

His life goal had been to build the "perfect vault." And as a professional designer in this domain, he had the resources he needed to do it.

And he did thorough research.

I remembered him telling me how if I'd want to keep thieves out, I'd have to think like one.

And maybe that sounds a bit strange, but there are some big security companies out there that hire ex-cons (bank robbers, professional safecrackers, thieves, and hackers) to deter future threats and eliminate flaws in their systems.

However, that wasn't the solution for me.

The "consulting price" was too high, and I certainly wasn't going to get in bed with thieves after what had happened.

Not to mention the danger I was putting my family in.

So, while this option was off the table, I knew there had to be a solution out there.

Without wasting a second, I took some time off and told my wife and daughters I was going to visit their uncle.

I kissed them goodbye, and I swore myself I wouldn't come back without the solution.

I went to Lincolnville, about an hour’s drive away, and told Bill what had happened and what I was so desperately searching for.

"Ooh... I got just the thing, Johnny. Give me a minute to grab something from my study. Actually, while you're waiting, look around and let me know if you spot anything unusual."

I didn't understand what he meant... So I just wandered around the ground floor... But apart from his weird taste in interior decor and how clean his windows were, I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary...

After about half an hour, he finally came back with a satisfying smile on his face and gave me a dusty, worn-out folder.

It was the answer to my search!

It wasn't the one I'd hoped, but it turned out to be the one I was looking for.

He told me there's no such thing as "the perfect lock." And there's no such thing as "the perfect vault."

Dead simple... Black on white.

It's a utopic dream.

But even though the lock or the door is not unbreakable, there is one thing that would make the room or the house behind that door impenetrable:

As you probably already know, if someone would want to break into your home, they'd have to either break the lock, break the door or take down the wall. Nothing shocking so far, that's how 80% or more of the burglaries take place.

An alarm system is great, but it has its limits. It has a lot of electronic parts that can fail at any time. Stuff the horn with builder's foam or cut the power for more than a day when you're away, and that alarm system is nothing more than a fancy wall ornament. Same goes for surveillance. Cut web access or find the recording unit, and that's it for "file footage."

A reliable system has to be simple. My uncle thought about the door, lock, and wall around it as a whole. There are 3 coordinates in space, right? X, Y, Z. Height, width, and depth. Secure those exact coordinates on a 2 feet radius around the door, and you make it unbreakable.

That's the real secret.

What you may not realize, however, is just how much brute force and the raw impact can such a simple setup withstand.

The real secret is the distribution of force in the surrounding wall and floor, all while blocking all access to the lock.

And the fundamentals are so easy, yet few know this secret, and it is rarely used.

So, if properly applied, it can take on a full all night battering ram assault...

And this amazing system is not only designed for doors. It can be used for windows, trap doors, attic doors, basically anything that has a hinge and is a potential point of entry.

So we got back home and started working on the project together.

The first thing he did was to write me a list of parts and tools. And it was all good and everything... Up until I got to the store and realized how much it all cost.

I came back home defeated... and told him... And a bit of silence followed...

"OK," he said." Give me a few hours. Let me see how we can make it work."

In the afternoon, he gave me a new list. But it was still 30% over budget.

"OK, John... Give me until tomorrow. We'll see."

I couldn't sleep that night... I must've rolled over 50 times, trying to get some rest. Finally, the clock rang 7. I rushed down and saw him sitting at the kitchen table, drinking coffee, with a satisfied look on his face.

"Read it and weep!"

I couldn't believe it.

I rushed to the store, bought everything, and we frenetically started working on the front door. 3 and a half hours and 2 coffee breaks later, and it was all done! The whole house!

The design was brilliant...

And the total cost for parts and tools... $104.

However, I'm sure we could have found the parts at a junkyard for free if we weren't in a rush.

But the most important thing is that it was incredibly safe, strong, and invisible on both the outside and the inside!

So, after building and installing the system, I thought I'd test it out to see if it really was as impenetrable as we thought it would be.

And of course, I tried to break down the front door. It was an old wooden door. A simple kick would've usually blown it off its hinges. But all I did was almost ending up in the ER for dislocating my shoulder.

I thanked Bill from the bottom of my heart and drove him home... I just couldn’t wait to get back and finally relax my mind and my soul, sitting on the couch inside my unconquerable castle. Because I was finally proud of myself. I was at long last not only the provider but also the protector of my family!

My family was finally SAFE.

Now, as I said, all that happened in 1975...

And since then, my family and I never had another problem. I found some marks on the lock and on the side of the bedroom window in the 80s, so I know someone tried to break in. But no one could.

No one that wasn't allowed in has set foot inside my home for 45 years. And the system still works like new, with no maintenance for the past 4 and a half decades.

Years passed, and being safe became a part of my family's mentality. Blackouts... Storms... Economic crises of the 80s and 2008 came and went. I was never scared again. Up until now.

This plague of biblical proportions is something else. And again, I'm not afraid for my family's well-being.
